The futuristic looking MTC (Modular Tactical Carbine) from ECHO 1 is probably one of the most intriguing assault rifles they have produced to date. Even though it looks like it blasted its way out of a sci-fi thriller, the MTC is actually based on their older SM series which has undergone some serious modifications.
If you hold your hand and squint really hard you can see that the heart of the rifle is still pretty much the same but everything around it has changed. At the front the MTC is equipped with a once piece CNC machined aluminum RAS which interlocks with the rifles polymer receiver with rock solid stability. The carry handle has been replaced with a low profile aluminum optics rail which features integrated iron sights. Its mag well has been changed out for one which accepts M4/M16 series magazines allowing for cross compatibility with one of the most popular magazines on the market. Although, if you wish you can replace the mag well with an SM series after minor modification. The stock is now a 6 position collapsible crane style which houses the rifles battery so there is no need for an external battery box or pouch. One thing which we will point out is although it appears to be capable of doing so, this stock does not fold. So do not try it!
Internally the rifle is very much the same as the old SM series as it features a full metal V3 gearbox outfitted with 8mm bearing bushings, steel gears and a metal spring guide with bearing. One thing which is different now is the design of the barrel and hop-up. On the MTC the hop-up chamber is actually pressed into the front of the gearbox shell making it much more solid and eliminates the lug failures of the older SM series rifles.
After you power it up and send some rounds downrange you will find the rifle performs quite smoothly and punches out shots at a respectable 370 fps. The hop-up bucking and nub combination which ECHO 1 has gone with is very aggressive so you would need to use BBs weighing between .28g and .3g or your shots will climb like a homesick angle. Being calibrated for these heavier rounds does however make the MTC quite good at long range. Fire off a burst and your rounds will carry out to 60 yards with a consistent grouping and with practice we were even able to pull off good shots from over 200 feet away.
True to its name, ECHO 1 MTC is a highly modular rifle capable of endless modifications. Aside from being compatible with the common M4/M16 series magazines you can also use buffer tube sling plates and aftermarket M4/M16 stocks not to mention it can be modified with SM series accessories as well. If you are a gearhead who loves to tinker with different loadouts and configurations, this is a dream come true!
